What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic injection that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. It's most often used on the forehead and around the eyes. Botox is a solution consisting of minuscule amounts of a purified botulinum toxin protein. This solution temporarily paralyzes the muscles found directly beneath your facial skin. When the movement of these muscles is restricted, the furrow in your brow or crow’s feet around your eyes become less pronounced, resulting in a smooth, more youthful appearance.

What happens during a Botox treatment?

When you meet with Dr. Ford for Botox injections, you'll relax on a treatment bed. Dr. Ford will examine your skin to identify where the injections will be most effective in addressing your concerns. She’ll clean your skin and begin the injections with a small needle. Treatment usually takes 20 minutes, and most patients don’t report any discomfort. If you're sensitive or nervous about needles, a topical anesthetic can be applied to reduce any sensations.

Dr. Ford has significant experience in delivering Botox to her patients and can create a natural appearance for you.

Will I need to do anything special to take care of my skin after Botox?

After a Botox treatment, you should take care to avoid the sun. Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunscreen. In fact, you should make sure to wear sunscreen daily, to reduce your exposure to harmful UV rays. You’ll also need to avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours after the injections.

How long does Botox last?

You'll notice the effects of Botox between 24-48 hours after treatment. The effects usually last for approximately three months. Typically, when you first begin Botox treatments the smoothing effects last for shorter periods of time, but over time with regular injections, the effects last longer as your muscles are trained to be still.
